Fears over location of new care centre for sex workers, drug users and the homeless

UNHAPPY residents have voiced their concerns about the location of a new healthcare centre for sex workers, drug users and the homeless.

As reported, planning permission was granted for the former Strand Infant School in Albion Street, Grimsby, to be turned into a community healthcare facility, incorporating a new Open Door centre.

CONTROVERSY: The former Strand Infant School building which is going to be demolished to make way for a new Open Door centre.

Open Door provides care for problematic drug users, homeless people, those who have recently left prison, sex workers and asylum seekers, among others.

Residents are concerned because the site is next to a school, a children's park and a residential home for the elderly.

St Hugh's Hospital offers free removal of PIP implants

ALL 42 women who had PIP implants fitted in Grimsby will be able to have them removed and replaced for free.

And today, we can reveal that 10 of those have suffered ruptures or leaks.

Free health check gives peace of mind

ONCE you reach 40 years old, you are at greater risk of suffering from diabetes, heart and kidney diseases and a stroke.

That is why doctors' surgeries are contacting patients between the ages of 40 and 74 years old, every five years, urging them to pop in for a free health check.

NHS Health Check – as it is known – aims to offer life-extending advice before people develop chronic illnesses.

Phillipa Hobson, programme co-ordinator for NHS Health Check, said: "There was a nationwide survey done which showed that people are at a much greater risk of developing a number of diseases when they are above 40 years old."

A special coffee morning was held at the Ashwood Surgery, on Ladysmith Road, Grimsby, offering patients the chance to have their health checked.

First-class idea gives teacher a close shave

AN INSPIRATIONAL teenager with diabetes has put his own worries aside to help others with the disease.

Ben Brown, 14, of Grimsby, has organised a series of events over the next few weeks to raise awareness and money for blood sugar detection dogs.

Currently the Medical Detection Dogs charity, which supplies the specially-trained canines, has a five-year waiting list with 30 people on it nationally.

This is because the charity relies on public funding to maintain each dog, which costs on average £10,000 throughout its lifetime.

Those suffering aggressive diabetes or low awareness can be eligible for a blood sugar detection dog as they can prompt a person to check blood sugar levels and take action before the need for acute medical assistance arises.

Charles Thody is hoping to make a flying start to his new role as chaplain of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

FORMER PILOT: Reverend Charles Thody has taken over as the new chaplain for the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The 49-year-old former pilot will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the chaplaincy team and will spend time on the wards and departments across the hospitals.

Mum's plea for more to sign up as organ donors and help life go on for others

WITHOUT a donated kidney, first-time mum Gemma Wardle wouldn't have been able to bring her daughter into the world – now she wants others to have the same chance.

There are currently 25 people in North East Lincolnshire waiting for an organ transplant according to NHS Blood and Transplant, and in the past 12 months, 15 local people received an organ donation for either the liver, kidney or cornea.

Humber Bridge pledge for hospital patients forced to pay for crossings

CQC publishes 12 reports from its review of services for people with learning disabilities

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) today publishes a further 12 reports from a targeted programme of 150 unannounced inspections of hospitals and care homes that care for people with learning disabilities.

The programme is looking at whether people experience safe and appropriate care, treatment and support and whether they are protected from abuse. A national report into the findings of the programme will be published in the Spring.

In November 2011 Cancer Research UK launched its R UV UGLY? campaign, an initiative calling on young Britons to face the damage inflicted on their skin by sunbeds.

The campaign targets young people aged 16-18, as well as older people aged 28-44 (e.g. mums and sisters), as research has shown they can often influence young people’s attitudes and behaviour towards using sunbeds.

Cancer Research UK have teamed up with the skin clinic, ‘Sk:n’, to offer people two free skin scans. This will allow young sunbed users and older ‘influencers’ to see the hidden damage lurking beneath the skin’s surface. Help available for people with mental health problems

Experts have today urged anybody who is concerned about the behaviour of somebody they know – or needs support themselves – to seek help now.

It comes after the body of reclusive schizophrenic Jacqueline Harrison lay undiscovered at a flat in Hainton Avenue for more than two years after she refused to see family members.

And with research from the Mental Health Foundation showing that one in four people will experience some kind of mental health problems, it is important to know where to seek help.

Haemophilia gene therapy shows early success

Just one injection could be enough to mean people with haemophilia B no longer need medication, according to an early study in the UK and the US.

Six patients were given a virus that infects the body with the blueprints needed to produce blood-clotting proteins. Four of them could then stop taking their drugs.

Doctors said the gene therapy was "potentially life-changing".

Other researchers have described it as a "truly a landmark study."

Vitamin D is rightly called the sunshine vitamin because the action of sunlight on our skin converts pre-vitamin D into a form our body can use.

Vitamin D is actually a hormone, and does some pretty important jobs for us, not least helping us to use the calcium we eat to keep our bones healthy. Without enough vitamin D, toddlers can develop rickets – this used to be a thing of the past, but in recent years there have been several hundred children treated.

Council refuses to reduce ‘ridiculously high’ care charges

CARE charges for elderly and vulnerable people in North East Lincolnshire will not be reduced – despite the council's leader branding them "ridiculously high".

In June, the newly-elected Labour administration promised to conduct a review into the charges for home care and day centres which had been introduced under the Fairer Contributions System.

From September, vital blood supplies see a sudden drop because fewer people are able to donate due to general illness becoming more prominent in the autumn and winter.

Excellent news for women over the age of 50 hit the headlines today – clinical evidence that one alcoholic drink a day can help keep women over the age of 50 not only happy, but healthy well into old age.

In a study obviously based on the idea of a little of what you fancy does you good, US researchers from the Harvard University School of Public Health in Boston studied 14,000 nurses from 1976 onwards and found that women over the age of 50 who treated themselves to one alcoholic drink daily for between five and seven days a week enjoyed a healthier old age than those who abstained or drank heavily.

HEALTH bosses are urging people to take care and be aware of the dangers of falling.

Having a fall can cause unseen damage by knocking your confidence.

Having a fall can have serious repercussions for an older person, sometimes resulting in a loss of independence.

Be aware of the dangers: About a third of all people aged over 65 fall each year, with higher rates among those over 75.

According to NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, it is estimated that falls affect 33 per cent of people over the age of 65.

Guide Dog steals the show at LINk meeting

When Rachael Allison from the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association came to the monthly LINk meeting on Tuesday 19th July 2011 to give her presentation, she brought a friend with her. Taya, a black Labrador, had no shortage of admirers and won over the LINk members in no time at all.

Our very special guest was just a hint of the meeting in store for them, Rachael gave a fascinating and engaging talk, involving her audience in the subject. As Taya roamed the hall, giving everyone a chance to stroke her, Rachael blindfolded volunteers and passed around glasses that simulated sight problems. She quizzed the group and got them voting fact or fiction on common misconceptions.

Social Isolation Event

In honour of Carers' Week, an event took place today to tackle social isolation and raise awareness.

Freeman Street Market was filled with organisations working with the local community who brought many different activities and giveaways.

The LINk was handing out copies of their nationally recognised young people's DVD which has been praised by the Department of Health and talking to people about local health and social care services.

Activities included a raffle, guess-how-many (each jelly baby in a jar represented a concern raised with the Safeguarding Adults team), line dancing, chair based exercises, Tai Chi, New Age Kurling and the Knitting Challenge.

The Knitting Challenge is a quirky fund-raiser for Age UK. Between now and November, volunteers will knit 650,000 miniature hats to sit on top of Innocent Smoothie bottles. In exchange, Innocent Smoothies will donate 25p from each smoothie to Age UK. At Freeman Street Market, attendees knitted over one hundred tiny hats. (I made one in the LINk colours!)

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and this year it focuses on an aspect vital to everyone: sleep.

Just think of how not getting enough sleep for one night can leave you tired and grumpy, affecting your ability to carry out your normal daily routine. Extended periods of poor, little or no sleep, can take this to extremes and severly depletes your reserves and coping mechanisms.

A good night's sleep is crucial to your body as well as your mind, as it is while you sleep that your body heals itself and your brain processes everything you've done that day allowing you to wake up rested and refreshed.

But often, it is only when we lack such things that we realise the true importance of them. There is a lot of truth in the saying 'you don't know what you've got until it's gone'.

So the Mental Health Foundation are working to promote the importance of sleep this Mental Health Awareness Week.

Website launches providing information about adult social care and health

RESIDENTS in North East Lincolnshire have received a tonic from health chiefs and volunteers.

A website providing universal information and advice about anything to do with adult social care and health has been launched.

The site – www.Services4.me.uk – is being run by the Care Trust Plus (CTP) in partnership with the council and Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire.

It is designed for everyone living or working in North East Lincolnshire, whether they are using adult social care or healthcare services, pay for their own care or are a carer.

THE latest technological advancements to safeguard the elderly and vulnerable residents have been showcased in North East Lincolnshire.

The new equipment has been fitted to a demonstration bungalow at the Willows Older People's Mental Health Resource Centre to showcase their advantages to the area's care professionals.

It is hoped the newly-equipped bungalow will demonstrate how the area's vulnerable and elderly residents could live in the future.

Among the high-tech gadgets installed are fall detectors and medication reminders.

WOMEN in the Humber region are being urged to look out for signs of ovarian cancer...

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and health bosses in the region want to make people aware of the symptoms of the condition.

The early symptoms to look out for are pain in the pelvis and lower stomach, persistent bloating and difficulty eating.

Regional director for public health at NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, Paul Johnstone, said: "When it comes to cancer of any kind the earlier it is detected the better chance the patient has of making a full recovery.

More area GPs launch pathfinder

ANOTHER group of GPs in Lincolnshire has been announced as pathfinders for a major NHS reform.

Skegness And Coast consortium will join three other pathfinders to help test how well GPs respond to their new care commissioning role after Primary Care Trusts were scrapped.

The group will be taking on commissioning responsibilities as part of the Government's plans set out in the NHS White Paper, Liberating The NHS: Equity And Excellence.

Dr Noel O'Kelly, a member of the Skegness And Coast consortium, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for our consortium to test national policies and influence how health services will develop for the future."

Fleur Taylor, assistant director for practice-based commissioning for NHS Lincolnshire, said: "These GPs will be at the cutting edge of the NHS reforms that will see GPs responsible for the budgets of their local population."
Clusters of GPs at Lincolnshire West, East Lindsey and Wellcomm were previously announced as national pathfinders in January.

Mum to set up group for diabetes sufferers in North East Lincolnshire

A SCARTHO mum is forming a new network of families affected by diabetes to help give out advice and support.

Jo Raven, 34, of Edge Avenue, is set to start Grimsby's only diabetes support group, based at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

Her eight-year-old son, Joseph, was diagnosed two years ago andwith the nearest organisation based in Scunthorpe, Jo thought it was about time carers and parents in the area came together to share their experiences.

New clinic will improve ongoing care for head injury patients

A NEW clinic at Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital is providing a lifeline for patients with minor head injuries.

Traditionally, patients attending the hospital's emergency care centre with a minor head injury were discharged and given an information leaflet.

A NEW reconstructive breast surgeon will offer pioneering treatment at Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

Jenny Smith, 40, will offer ground-breaking surgery to women in the region as part of her new role as consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon at the Pink Rose Suite.

Among the procedures Jenny specialises in is using tissue from the stomach area to reconstruct the breast following cancer surgery – a method currently only available to women willing to travel to Hull.

The Care Quality Commission today (27 October) highlighted areas of poor practice in mental health services for patients who are subject to the Mental Health Act, and pledged to use its regulatory powers to lever improvement.
